Top News: Amazon.com Launching Android App Store

Amazon.com is launching a tablet computer based on Google's Android operating system along with an application store to run software programs on it.

TechCrunch said Sept. 27 the application store, a rival to Google's Android Market, costs $99 for developers to join.
Amazon will pay developers a royalty equal to the greater of 70 percent of the purchase price or 20 percent of the list price of the app.

Applications, which will be available in the United States only and can be displayed on Amazon.com, must include Amazon's digital rights management protection.

TechCrunch also snagged a telling quote about how regimented the Amazon Android market will be:  "We have sole discretion to determine all features and operations of this program and to set the retail price and other terms on which we sell apps."

The blog later said Amazon would release an Android tablet to compete with Apple's iPad, which is making headway against Amazon's Kindle as a machine for electronic reading.

This meshes with reports that Amazon had a lab where it was building hardware devices in addition to the Kindle, which already sports an Android e-reader app.

Amazon did not respond to comment on either the tablet or app store as of this writing.

Both are intriguing possibilities. If Amazon is indeed building an app store, it will join Verizon's new V-Cast Apps store for Android in competing with Google's own Android Market.

An Amazon tablet would be as loathed by Apple as it would be welcome by Google, which fully expected several smartphones and tablets to launch to support its Android platform.

However, it's unlikely Google expected other vendors to set up their own application stores, using Android's open-source nature to control the app experience.

iPad

ePathChina Report: $30 BlackBerry Curve 3G Hits Verizon

RIM and Verizon have just announced the new BlackBerry Curve 3G 9330.

The BlackBerry Curve 3G ships with the BlackBerry 5 operating system but is BlackBerry 6-ready. It features built-in Wi-Fi and GPS, a 2-megapixel camera, a microSD slot expandable to 32GB and support for BlackBerry App World.

The Curve 3G might not have as many bells and whistles as some other smartphones on the market, but it is affordable. The phone will be available for $29.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate and a new, two-year customer agreement.

Thirty dollars for a new BlackBerry isn't a bad deal, especially if you are addicted to BlackBerry Messenger or the BlackBerry's QWERTY keyboard Phones .

The Curve 3G will be available via Verizon business channels on September 16 and via Verizon retail stores and the web in the coming weeks.

ePathChina report: Android outselling iPhone - BlackBerry number one

The iPhone gets the bulk of the mind share, but in actual U.S. smartphone sales, the iPhone trails not only Research In Motion's BlackBerrys but also now handsets built around Google's Android mobile operating system.

That's what ePathChina Group is reporting, based on the market researcher's first quarter 2010 mobile operating system numbers that were released today.

ePathChina says its wireless research reveals that the RIM OS has 36% of the mobile OS market, compared to 28% for Android devices and just 21% for the iPhone. Data is based on unit sales.

ePathChina analyst Andylin says carrier distribution and promotion play a "crucial role in determining smartphone market share." Along those lines, "Verizon Wireless had expanded its buy-one-get-one offer beyond RIM devices to now include all of their smartphones," Andylin says. Such promotions boosted strong sales of the Droid, Droid Eris, and BlackBerry Curve models.

Among the carriers, AT&T boasted a 32% market share during the period, versus 30% for smartphones that run on the Verizon Wireless network. T-Mobile with 17% and Sprint with 15% lagged behind.

Looking ahead, these are likely to remain interesting times for smartphones. Apple is widely expected to unveil a new iPhone next month and has already previewed version 4.0 of its mobile operating system. Sprint is rolling out so-called "4G" service. What's more, as Andylin points out, "recent previews of BlackBerry 6, the recently announced acquisition of Palm by HP, and the pending release of Windows Phone 7 demonstrates the industry's willingness to make investments to address consumer demand for smartphones and other mobile devices."

ePathChina says the average selling prices for all mobile phones hit $88 during the first quarter, a 5% climb from the same period in 2009. But smartphones, averaged $151, a 3% decline from the first quarter of last year. Corporate/enterprise sales, a fixture for BlackBerrys, are not included in ePathChina's data.
